Announcement on the occasion of World Roma Day

CEDEM, Center for Roma Initiatives, Coalition Roma Circle, Roma “Walk with Us – Phiren Amenca” and the Civic Alliance announce on the occasion of April 8, World Roma Day, that Roma men and women are still more exposed to discrimination and hate speech than any other social group.

Although it is indisputable that progress has been made in improving the position of the Roma, the Roma Decade has not yet fully taken root outside the institutions. Citizens are poorly informed about what the Decade represents, which is why there is a lack of broader social support without which there is no sustainable Roma integration. Citizens’ attitudes towards Roma continue to be colored by stereotypes and prejudices.

According to CEDEM’s ethnic distance survey conducted in December last year, every second resident of Montenegro does not want to have a member of the Roma community as a neighbor. Those who think like that today will be decision makers tomorrow, and that is something that should worry us.
