As winners of the national competition “Truth Through Memes \u2013 Combating Disinformation”<\/strong> (Meme the Truth \u2013 Combat Disinformation Through Memes<\/em>), young volunteers Isidora Gazivoda, Delila Agovi\u0107 (representing the team from Ro\u017eaje), and Paulina Kapi\u010di\u0107<\/strong> represented Montenegro during a study visit to Bucharest, organised within the framework of the E-MPACT \u2013 Ensemble pour une Mobilisation Participative et Active Contre la D\u00e9sinformation<\/strong> project. The project is implemented by Freedom House Romania, the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM), and Transparency International Moldova, with the financial support of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).<\/p>\n\n\n

The study visit brought together young people from Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Montenegro with the aim of strengthening their knowledge of media literacy, critical thinking and ways to counter disinformation. Through a rich programme, the participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences, learn about good practices and build new partnerships with their peers from across the region, demonstrating how volunteering can open the door to international experiences, learning and active civic engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special part of the visit was dedicated to the work of Francophone institutions that contribute to building more resilient societies through education, international cooperation and the promotion of democratic values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the visit to the Regional Representation of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) for Central and Eastern Europe, participants learned about the core values that unite the Francophone community \u2013 democracy, cultural diversity, solidarity and critical thinking. They were also introduced to OIF’s initiatives aimed at combating disinformation and strengthening democratic resilience, with particular emphasis on the importance of media literacy and active citizenship in today’s society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study visit continued with a visit to the Regional Representation of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) for Central and Eastern Europe, where participants learned more about projects supporting students, researchers and universities across the region. Discussions focused on the role of education, academic cooperation and international networks in promoting critical thinking and strengthening young people’s resilience to information manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the programme, participants also visited the Europe Direct Centre, where they met with representatives of civil society, experts and practitioners working to combat disinformation. The discussions focused on the challenges of the digital environment, the role of civic activism and the importance of regional cooperation in protecting democratic values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the educational programme, the study visit provided an opportunity for young volunteers from the three countries to network, exchange experiences and build new friendships and partnerships. Through joint activities, workshops and informal gatherings, participants further developed their communication skills, intercultural competences and awareness of the importance of volunteering as a driver of positive social change.<\/p>\n\n\n

Young volunteers made a particularly valuable contribution to the project, demonstrating that volunteering is much more than simply giving one’s free time \u2013 it is an opportunity for personal growth, acquiring new knowledge and actively contributing to addressing social challenges. The study visit confirmed that when young people are given the opportunity to learn and cooperate with peers from other countries, they can become important ambassadors of media literacy, critical thinking and democratic values within their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants also shared their impressions of the study visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isidora emphasised that the programme’s focus on media literacy and combating disinformation made the strongest impression on her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The study visit to Bucharest was an unforgettable experience. The main focus of the visit was on the role of Francophone institutions and media literacy in combating disinformation. During our visits to OIF and AUF, I learned more about critical thinking and initiatives aimed at preventing the spread of disinformation. At the Europe Direct office, we listened to representatives of civil society and experts on disinformation, which showed me how important not only international but also regional cooperation is. Besides all that, we had the opportunity to explore the beauty of Bucharest and make new friends, which is why I am certain I will visit this city again.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delila highlighted how the international environment and exchange of experiences contributed to her personal and professional development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My stay in Bucharest was an extremely valuable experience that went beyond an ordinary visit to a European capital. Interacting with participants and experts from different backgrounds enabled me to gain new perspectives, acquire useful knowledge and establish valuable contacts. Working in an international environment further strengthened my adaptability, organisational skills and problem-solving abilities. I am especially proud of winning second place, which represents recognition of my hard work and provides strong motivation for my future efforts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paulina said that the study visit helped her step outside her comfort zone and gain new experiences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My stay in Bucharest was an exceptional experience that I will remember for a long time. Not only is the city beautiful, but the people I met were also truly inspiring. I learned a great deal, expanded my abilities and improved my problem-solving skills. What meant the most to me was stepping out of my comfort zone by meeting new people and building new friendships. I hope there will be many more opportunities like this for young people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study visit to Bucharest once again confirmed that volunteering opens the door to international experiences, new knowledge and active participation of young people in building societies that are more resilient to disinformation. Through shared learning, exchange of experiences and regional cooperation, the participants gained not only new knowledge but also the motivation to share what they had learned with their peers and contribute to building more informed, responsible and democratic communities.<\/p>\n\n\n
