CEDEM joins in commemorating the global campaign: “16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women“, which aims to raise awareness of gender-based violence as a human rights issue locally, nationally and internationally.
The #16Days Campaign began on November 25th, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and ends December 10th, the International Human Rights Day.
In this regard, CEDEM recalls that by engaging solely in the work done by the abuser, the state unfairly places the abuser in the spotlight, while leaving the victim alone, without much-needed support and protection, at least during the time of the “utterance” judgments, and very often later, because of the penalties, as shown by the results of the CEDEM survey on: “Violence Against Women – A Survey on the Socio-Economic Situation of Women Victims of Violence“, are too light and do not reach the goal.
It is necessary to establish, as soon as possible, a complete support system for victims of violence, to establish a crisis center and a safe house, to work on the interconnection and cooperation of all institutions involved in the fight against violence, as well as on prevention, education and specialization.
