Citizens' support for Montenegro's membership of the European Union (EU) is declining and stands at 55 percent, with a possible crisis about Brexit and the slower accession process.

This was announced at a press conference presenting the results of the second annual poll "Political Public Opinion of Montenegro", conducted by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM) from 1 to 10 December, with a total of 1,009 respondents.

CEDEM's director Milena Bešić said that when asked if Montenegro was going the right way, there were more citizens who felt that Montenegro was going the right way than the number of those who thought Montenegro wasn't going the right way.

"46.2 percent of citizens thinks that the country is going the wrong way, 28.2 the right way, while 25.6 percent don't know or can't evaluate the answer.
When it comes to the trend compared to previous research, the number of citizens who think that Montenegro is going the right way is still decreasing and the number of citizens who think that Montenegro is going the wrong way is still increasing, ”Bešić pointed out.

CEDEM's program manager Ognjen Marković said that when asked if Montenegro should be an EU member, 55 percent of citizens said they should, 26 percent they shouldn't, while 19 percent did not have an opinion on this topic.

"When measuring the trend of EU support, there is a moderate but steady decline in EU membership support. This information is also a historical minimum when we talk about the support of EU citizens since the time CEDEM started conducting research", Marković stated.
